Bangladesh is a large deltaic plain formed under the influence of three mighty rivers –Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna its flat topography, abundant water, and sub-tropical climate, constitute an excellent habitat for the rice plants. Rice, as such, evolved as the staple food of the people of the country and was historically associated with their culture, rites, and rituals. With time, as the population increased at a rapid pace, the gap between rice production and food requirements for the millions widened.

One of the major areas of agricultural research in Bangladesh is the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, which is working to develop the main food paddy production and varieties of the country. It began its journey as an East Pakistan Rice Research Institute on October 9, 1971, at Jaydevpur, 4 km north of Dhaka. After independence in the 9th, the institution was renamed Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, which was established under Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Act 1.

The institute is being run by a Board of Management following the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (Amendment) Act, I and Bri Act, 20. The director-general is the chairman of the board, who is the chief executive of the organization. It has 6 research departments, 3 regional offices, three general services, and eight administrative branches. There is 3 total manpower with 5 scientists / agricultural engineers/officers. About one-third of the scientists have advanced training, including MS and Ph.D.
