According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), an adult need to consume 13 kg of sugar or 17 kg of molasses per year. In Bangladesh, this amount is still below 3 kg. Although the per capita consumption of sugar is 6 kg, the country will require 9.2 lakh tonnes of sugar and molasses in the year 2020 (population 1833 million). At present, iksu is grown in about 1.8 lakh hectares of land in the country (of which 1 lakh hectare is in sugar mill area and 0.8 lakh hectares in non-sugar mill molasses area) and a total of 73 lakh tonnes of iksu is produced. In this, the average yield of Ikshu stands at 40.52 tons/ha (46 tons/ha in the Chinikal area, 36 tons/ha in the Gur area). A total of 1 crore 11 lakh tonnes of iksu is needed for 9 lakh tonnes of sugar and molasses every year as per the demand. If production per hectare of Ikshu is not increased, the production of Ikshu is not possible. And that is why extensive research is needed.

BSRI is working with its limited manpower and resources to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar and molasses production in the country. Basically, two types of work are carried out by this institute: – (a) Development of improved varieties and improved production techniques of Iksu, palm, dates, golpata and sugar beet and (b) Dissemination of the developed improved varieties and production techniques among Iksu farmers.

Its research wing consists of eight research departments, one quarantine center, and two regional centers. On the other hand, the Technology Transfer Wing consists of two main divisions, six sub-centers, and three branches. The technology transfer wing generally trains small farmers and extension workers, sets up demonstrations of new technologies on farmer’s land, disseminates new agricultural news through various publications, tests the applicability of new technology on farmer’s land, and collects feedback.

In 1912 in Coimbatore, India, the first Eksu research program was started in this subcontinent with the establishment of the ‘Eksu Prakusha Kendra’ and in Bangladesh, it was started in 1933. The evolutionary history of BSRI is briefly mentioned here:

Ikkuchara Laboratory (1933-1947):

Seedling Testing Laboratory was established at Manipuri Farm in Dhaka in 1933 to collect real seeds (fuzz) of ikshu from the ikshu breeding center of Coimbatore and select improved varieties suitable for this area. The laboratory was then operated under the funding of the British Government’s Royal Imperial Council of Agriculture and was operational till 1947. Some cultivars selected from this laboratory such as Co 419, Co 527, etc. are still being cultivated in different areas of Bangladesh.

Iksu Research Center (1951-1971):

In 1951, the Ministry of Agriculture of the then East Pakistan Government established the ‘Ikshu Research Center’ with only 17 manpower at Ishwardi in Pabna district. The center’s activities were then limited to breeding and breed selection. Nine cultivars were developed from this centre, of which Ishwardi 1/53 and Ishwardi 2/54 are still being cultivated in different parts of the country. For further development of the Ikhu Research Centre, the Food and Agriculture Council of the Government of Pakistan placed the center under the control of the Central Government. But in 1965, without any significant improvement, the Center reverted back to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Provincial Government. As a result research activities are conducted with limited manpower and research facilities. This center was almost destroyed in the 1971 War of Independence.

Eksu Research Institute (1971-1979):

After the independence of the country in 1973, the Iksu Research Center was handed over to the then Bangladesh Sugar Mills Corporation (now Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation) under the Ministry of Industry. In 1974, the Bangladesh Sugar Mills Association formulated a project called ‘Iksu Research Institute’ which was approved by ECNEC with a regional center at Thakurgaon.

Iksu Research and Training Institute (1980-1988):

During the Second Five Year Plan (1980-85), the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation submitted a project to the Planning Commission to establish ‘Staff Training Centres’ at Ishwardi and Thakurgaon. During the consideration of the project the proposed ‘Staff Training Center’ was approved to be attached to the Iksu Research Institute and the name of the Iksu Research Institute was changed to ‘Iksu Research and Training Institute’.

Bangladesh Eye Research Institute (1989-2015):

In 1989, the government, through a cabinet decision, transferred the Iksu Research and Training Institute from the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Organization to the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of upgrading it to a national institution and assigned the responsibility of conducting research on date, palm and other sweet national crops along with countrywide Iksu research. In 1996, His Excellency the President of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh abolished the Institute of Equus Research and Training and established the ‘Bangladesh Equus Research Institute’ (Ordinance No. 23, 18 June 1996).

The Act gave new responsibilities to the Bangladesh Iksu Research Institute for comprehensive research on sugar, molasses, and other sweet crops by developing it into an autonomous national institution. Then on August 17, 1996, the Bangladesh Eye Research Institute Act (Act No. 11 of 1996, August 17, 1996) was enacted in the National Parliament of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The Act was subsequently amended on 21 September 2002 to introduce similar arrangements for other Autonomous Agricultural Research Institutes (NARS) in Bangladesh (Bangladesh Iksu Research Institute [Amendment] Act, 21 September 2002).

Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute (2015- ):

According to the executive order of His Excellency the President of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on November 09, 2015, the government has changed the name of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute to ‘Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute’ (BSRI) in Bengali and Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI) in English. At present, the company continues to research and develop technologies and techniques for sweet crops such as palm, date, golpata, sugar beet, stevia, etc.
