The history of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute is more than a hundred years. It began its journey as a small branch under the ‘Bengal Land Records Department’ based on the Femin Commission Report of 1880. From here actually the beginning of the research program in agriculture in Bengal at that time. Then in 1908, Dhaka Farm was established on 161.20 hectares of land. The establishment of Dhaka Farms was a landmark in the field of agriculture. But in 1962, when the then government acquired the land of Dhaka Farm (now Sher Bangla Nagar) to establish the 2nd capital, the future of agricultural research became uncertain. The most notable and significant event in the history of agricultural research is the issuance of Presidential Ordinance No. 32 of 1973. This Ordinance provides adequate opportunities for development and integrated activities of agricultural research. Following this, the ‘Directorate of Agriculture (Research and Education)’ was abolished through Presidential Ordinance No. 62, and the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) emerged as an autonomous institution.
