The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is one of the largest engineering institutes in the country. Although the rural development program was started in the ’80s, its scope has widened over time. Starting from the remote areas of the country, LGED has a huge workforce within the city limits.
The contribution that LGED has made in mobilizing the rural economy through road connectivity and the development of hat bazaars and growth centers in rural areas is visible today. The contribution of these infrastructures in achieving the growing growth of the country is immense. Today, people in remote villages have access to paved roads within a maximum of two kilometers. These rural infrastructures are playing a huge role in improving the living standards of the people and alleviating poverty.
Apart from rural infrastructure development, LGED is also playing a role in urban and urban development. LGED is also involved in providing technical assistance to urban local government organizations (municipalities and city corporations) and improving the management and efficiency of these organizations.

History of LGED
Bangladesh is an agricultural economy. Rural development is very important in achieving the economic progress of this country. At the beginning of the sixties of the last century, four programs of the Comilla model were adopted for rural development, among which were
1. Thana Training and Development Center (TTDC)
2. Rural Works Program (RWP)
3. Thana Irrigation Program (TIP) and
4. Two-Tier Co-operatives

The implementation of rural development programs included in the Comilla model was the main basis for the development of rural infrastructure. Later in the seventies, a cell was formed under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives to implement the program, which was transformed into the Works Program Wing in 1982 under the Development Budget. In October 1974, the Works Program Wing was reorganized as the Local Government Engineering Bureau (LGEB) under the Revenue Budget. In August 1992, LGEB was promoted to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Of the four programs under the Comilla model, LGED is implementing the remaining three, apart from the two-tier cooperative program. These activities are rural infrastructure development, micro water resource development, and urban development. These are implemented under three sectors. LGED is a decentralized organization with about ninety-eight percent of its manpower working at the field level.
LGED conducts regular training activities for its own officers/employees, local government organizations, and other stakeholders in the formulation of development projects, preparation of infrastructure databases, maps, technical specifications (manuals, etc.), and creation of skilled manpower and capacity building.
