As a result, the mills closed down in the early 19th century. Efforts to produce cotton in this country were very limited during Pakistan’s rule. Before independence, local textile mills used to source raw materials from West Pakistan. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, when Pakistan cut off the supply of raw materials, the importance of local cotton production was felt. At that time our textile industries were facing serious problems due to lack of raw materials.

In this situation, the Cotton Development Board was formed under the Ministry of Agriculture to expand cotton cultivation in the country in 1972. The Cotton Development Board started experimental cotton cultivation with American upland cotton at the field level in 1974-75. In 1976-77, cotton cultivation started in the country on a large scale with the introduction of new cotton varieties from America. Cotton Development Board Job 2023.

Plains Cotton Cultivation Technology

Plains Cotton Cultivation System

Selection of land:

Cotton cannot tolerate standing water in the soil. Therefore, high land is suitable for cotton cultivation where flood or rainwater does not accumulate for more than 6-8 hours. Well-drained soil with favorable plant root expansion is suitable for cotton cultivation. Soils of sandy loam and loam nature are best for cotton cultivation. Also, cotton can be grown on atel loam and silty atel loam soils. Both very low and very alkaline soils are unsuitable for cotton cultivation. A soil pH of 6-7.5 is good for cotton cultivation. Cotton can also be grown in upland areas with moderate salinity (8 ds/m). Shaded moist soil should be avoided for cotton cultivation.

land ready:

1.0-1.5 tonnes of dung/compost manure per bigha should be spread on the land before cultivation. Then, after the rains, the land should be leveled with 3-4 plows and a ladder, understanding the condition of the soil. Various garbage and weeds should be cleaned thoroughly. In unfavorable environments, cotton seeds can be sown in dibbling method without tillage, and yield is obtained.

Making seedlings and planting:

10-12 days old seedlings can be sown on the mainland by making seedlings in paper or polythene packets by providing a canopy above. In this way, by cutting jute and pushing paddy in Nabi, cotton is sown in that land and other crops are obtained.

Sowing time:

The best time to sow cotton seeds is from 1 Ashad to 15 Shravan (June 15 to July 30). However, seeds can be sown up to 30 Shravan i.e. 15 August. Early sowing of hybrid varieties is best. If the seeds are sown at the right time, cotton can be raised and high-value crops such as boro rice, potatoes, wheat, maize, and vegetables can be easily grown on that land.

Seed Rate:

Cotton Development Board’s own Ufshi OP variety requires 1.0 kg seed per bigha and 500-600 gm seed for hybrids. Before sowing, it is better to soak the cotton seeds in water for 3-4 hours and rub them with dry soil or ash. It should be remembered that at least 3,000 plants per bigha are required for high yield.

Seed Treatment:

Before sowing, take the cotton seeds in a container and mix 5 grams of Gauchu/Confidor/Ekstar insecticide for each kg of seeds with little water so that there is no excess water. Then it should be dried in the shade for 40-50 minutes and sown.

Sowing Method:

Cotton seeds should be sown in rows. Rows should be made lengthwise along the north-south direction. If the seed is sown at the appropriate time, all varieties should be sown at a row-to-row distance of 90 cm (3 feet or 2 hands) and a plant-to-plant distance of 45 cm (1.5 feet or 1 hand). It is best to raise the soil along the rows and sow the seeds on it. Because it facilitates water drainage from the land, seedlings are protected from waterlogging.

As a result, the growth of seedlings is better. 2-3 seeds should be lightly covered with a little soil at a depth of half an inch at the specified distance on the row. If the seeds are covered tightly with soil or the seeds are planted too deep in the hole, it may be difficult for the seedlings to grow.
