Along with other specialized public / private initiatives, the government has established the Employment Bank under Act No. 6 of 1996 for the purpose of providing employment to the unemployed youth of the country. Since its inception, in spite of various limitations, the Bank’s officers and employees at all levels have continued their relentless efforts to engage the unemployed youth of the country in self-employment.
The current authorized capital of the bank is Rs.1000.00 crore, the paid-up capital is Rs.600.00 crore and the actual paid-up capital is Rs.559 crore. Till March 21, a total accumulated loan of Tk. Through this loan assistance, direct and indirect employment of 2730610 people including 82701 borrowers has been created directly. As of March 21 of the current financial year, the bank has disbursed a loan of Taka 1300.06 crore. In addition to the recovery of non-performing loans, the bank has been able to keep the rate of classified loans at a tolerable level which is 4% and there is no provision deficit against this classified loan. Although profit-making is not the primary goal of the bank, the bank has been able to make a profit every year since its inception as it continues to collect loans in cash through controlled expenditure and intensive supervision. In the last 2019-2020 financial year, the bank has earned an operating profit of Tk 16.59 crore.
